Job Description

We have a client seeking an experienced and skilled Journeyman Motor Winder to join their (IBEW/Union) team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the inspection, rewinding, and repair of various AC and DC electric motors, generators, and related rotating equipment. $47.00 per hour (or current IBEW/Union rate at time of hire)

This position requires a high degree of technical proficiency, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work in accordance with the Electrical Apparatus Service Association (EASA) standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspection & Disassembly: Carefully disassemble electric motors and other rotating equipment. Perform thorough visual inspections and electrical tests (e.g., surge, hi-pot, meg-ohm) to identify faults.

  • Data Collection: Accurately record all nameplate information and winding data (such as coil type, wire size, turns, and connection) before stripping.

  • Stripping & Cleaning: Properly strip and clean motor components, including stators and armatures, using burnout ovens, hand tools, and other prescribed methods.

  • Rewinding & Insulating: Manufacture and/or insert new coils (both random-wound and form coil) according to specifications. Apply insulation materials and wedge coils securely.

  • Connection & Brazing: Form and connect coil leads according to diagrams. Perform brazing and/or soldering to ensure robust electrical connections.

  • Testing & Quality Assurance: Conduct in-process and final electrical tests to verify winding integrity and ensure all repairs meet or exceed EASA AR100 standards.

  • Reassembly: Reassemble all components, install new bearings as needed, and prepare the unit for final testing and shipment.

  • Safety & Compliance: Adhere strictly to all company and union safety protocols, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

 

Qualifications & Skills

  • Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience as an electric motor winder.

  • Apprenticeship: Completion of a certified Motor Winder apprenticeship program is highly preferred.

  • Technical Knowledge:

    • Proficiency in winding various types of AC/DC motors and generators.

    • Strong understanding of winding data, connection diagrams, and electrical schematics.

    • Skilled in the use of electrical testing equipment (multimeters, surge testers, core-loss testers, etc.).

    • Proficient with precision measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, feeler gauges).

    • Experience with brazing, soldering, and TIG welding is a strong asset.

 

  • Other:

    • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    • Must have a valid driver's license.

 

Union Position Details

  • Bargaining Unit: This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local 46.

  • CBA: All wages, hours, and working conditions are governed by the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between Cascade Machinery and Electric, Inc. and the IBEW.

  • Membership: As a condition of employment, the successful candidate must become and remain a member in good standing of the IBEW or pay applicable agency fees, in accordance with the CBA.

  • Compensation: Wages will be paid at the Journeyman rate as specified in the current CBA.
